
Anthropology Subfields
Most universities teach multiple subfields of anthropology. However, the discipline is traditionally divided into four major areas referred to as the “Four-Field Approach.” Below are separate guides to the four major subfields of anthropology.

Archaeology
The study of material remains left by past historic or prehistoric human societies.
Biological Anthropology
The study of human evolution, biological variation, and adaptation.
Cultural Anthropology
The study of how culture influences beliefs, practices, and institutions.
Linguistic Anthropology
The study of the construction and use of language as a cultural resource.
